Dust Extraction

Why Dust Extraction

Often overlooked, or considered ‘unimportant’, there are long-term health problems associated with dust. To combat the large quantities of dust generated during certain tasks, Handy Hire WA has introduced ‘Dust Extraction and Control Systems’ with all cutting, drilling or grinding machinery.

Asbestos dust has for many years received the publicity and health warnings associated with the long-lasting dangers, but silica dust has not been subject to the same public exposure.

Health Effects of Exposure to Silica Dust?

The following diseases are caused by excessive exposure to airborne silica dust:

  • Silicosis;
  • Acute silicosis (rapid development after short exposure to high concentrations);
  • Silicotuberculosis (silicosis sufferers are at a higher risk of tuberculosis);
  • Lung cancer.

Silica, and other dust particles can also cause or exacerbate these diseases:

  • Simple chronic bronchitis;
  • Chronic airway obstruction;
  • Lung cancer.

Prevention is Better than Cure!

Handy Hire has taken steps to include the hire of a dedicated dust extraction unit suitable for the task at hand. For the tradie on-site, the business owner, the enthusiast, or your home DIY user, we rent out with our tool hire an effective dust extractor which can help prevent the consequences of exposure to those dangerous dust particles thrown up by power tools and accessories.

A Cleaner Work-Space

One of the best ways to control dust is by using water to bind the dust directly at the source. To keep the workplace clean, a slurry collector can be attached to the unit. If water is not an option, cutting/drilling or grinding tools and equipment should be used alongside a dust collection device that captures dust directly at the source.

Standard or household vacuum cleaners are not able to catch the tiny dust particles and should not be used for this purpose.

All of our dust collection units are equipped with efficient HEPA filters providing additional protection for all workers in the surrounding areas. Please note: the operator should also wear an appropriate face mask in relation to Work Safe regulations.

Minimise your Exposure

Concrete cutting, coring, grinding and demolition creates a lot of dust. A combination of the following measures are some of the best ways to minimise your exposure to airborne dust particles on site.

  • Elimination at the source;
  • Clean the floor frequently;
  • Filter the air;
  • Wear a dust mask.
