Protective Clothing (PPE) Safety

Before starting out on any DIY, or even tradie project, there are some essential pieces of equipment that need to be accounted for. This is before we pick up any power tool, whether your own personal equipment or hired.

We’re talking about safety equipment, protective clothing and PPE.

Yes, we’ve all thought ‘oh it won’t happen to me’, or ‘I’ve done this a thousand times’. No one can predict the unexpected, and it is at this split second that protective equipment may, and does, save lives, limbs or lasting damage.

Different DIY situations have different safety concerns, but it is unlikely that you are going to be fully protected unless you have the correct safety essentials for a particular task. Many of these are cheap, readily available and potentially invaluable to your safety.

All too often, especially during our hot climate months, it is all too tempting to tackle a home project in bare feet or wearing only thongs, shorts and a singlet, but it is surely just not worth the risk. Always be prepared to prevent any potential mishap.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

It is important to start dressed for the occasion. We suggest that you keep a separate set of cloths specifically for your DIY projects. Tough and rugged tight fitting clothing with no loose ends or ties that could get caught in tools or machinery, and a pair of correctly sized safety boots;

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

PPE is often very inexpensive, readily available and should be available to hand for all your tasks. Items such as protective eyewear, ear defenders, a heavy-duty visor (welding etc.), a hard hat for working at height or below potentially unstable objects, a safety harness when working on ladders or scaffolding.

OTHER SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Other safety considerations are the more common sense or check list things such as power circuit breakers, remove loose clothing items, tie back long hair, removing jewellery and keeping others and pets out of harms way for example.

Of course this is not an exhaustive list and you can never be too prepared.
